Sustainable in everything at Mitland

04/12/2025

Hotel Mitland is one of the greenest hotels in Utrecht. Not only because of its beautiful location in a green-rich environment, but also due to the many measures that limit the impact on the environment. An extensive renovation in 2006 transformed Hotel Mitland into a sustainable eco-hotel.

Sedum roof (roof covered with grass) with window sections

Sustainability is in the DNA of Hotel Mitland. A major renovation in 2006 turned the complex into a sustainable eco-hotel. Since 2012, Hotel Mitland has also held a Golden Green Key, the international hallmark for companies that seriously and verifiably engage in sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Companies with this hallmark do everything they can to protect the environment without compromising the comfort and quality for their guests. Hotel Mitland also goes a step further than the normal laws and regulations require. Major booking websites like Booking.com and Expedia mention on their platforms when a location has a Green Key certificate, because travelers value this when making a green choice for accommodation.

Green oasis on the roof

In the kitchen of Hotel Mitland, a special pit for organic waste has been installed for generating biogas. On part of the roof, there are 480 solar panels, and another part is planted with sedum. These are succulents that can withstand intense sun and drought very well, but also endure very humid periods. Besides the beautiful view of the green oasis on the undulating roof, there are many more benefits: sedum improves air quality and reduces the amount of rainwater flowing into the sewer. The sedum roof further reduces the amount of CO2 in the air and provides natural insulation, requiring less energy to heat and cool the hotel.

New sustainable solutions

Hotel Mitland is constantly seeking new sustainable solutions. In 2023, for example, 3M sun-blocking film was applied to the windows. This film offers an excellent balance between maximum light transmission and heat blocking, preventing up to 66 percent of the heat entering through the window. This measure significantly reduces the energy use by the air conditioning. Mitland also considers sustainability when choosing suppliers. Therefore, Mitland chose De Koffiejongens. A company that supplies biodegradable coffee cups made from plants, which can be converted into nutritious compost after use. And the toilet paper in the hotel is from The Good Roll. This paper is made from 100 percent bamboo and recycled paper, without chlorine, color, or fragrance additives. The Good Roll also donates half of its net profit to building toilets in Ghana.

Second life

Materials replaced after a renovation at Hotel Mitland, such as mattresses, bedding, and tableware, are given a second life in several Eastern European countries. Hotel Mitland collaborates with Stichting Oost-Europa for this. As a hotel guest, you can contribute to a better environment. For example, by using your towels more often or turning off the heating when leaving your room. When you leave your room as a hotel guest, the (LED) lighting automatically switches off using your room key. You can also use the four charging stations for eight electric cars and the charging point for electric bicycles.
