Conscious choices at Hotel Mitland

From energy savings and water consumption to waste, mobility and our green environment: Hotel Mitland takes measures in various areas to reduce its impact on the environment. We have been Green Key certified since 2012.

Green Key-certified

Since 2012, Hotel Mitland has held a Green Key certificate. Green Key is an international sustainability certification for companies in the hospitality sector. To become certified, organizations must meet established criteria across various aspects of their operations.

For Hotel Mitland, the certification is an incentive to continue taking a critical look at areas such as energy and water consumption, waste, mobility and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Solar panels and a sedum roof

Various measures have also been taken on and around the building. There are 480 solar panels on part of the roof. Another part of the roof is covered with sedum planting.

Sedum withstands both dry and wet weather conditions well. In addition, a sedum roof helps temporarily retain rainwater and contributes to the insulation of the building.

In the kitchen, Hotel Mitland also has a special installation for collecting organic waste. This waste can then be processed and used for the production of biogas.

Saving energy

We continue to look for ways to reduce our energy consumption. For example, in 2023, sun-protective window film from 3M was applied. This film reduces the amount of solar heat that enters through the windows, which can mean less cooling is needed on hot days.

Energy-saving measures have also been implemented in other areas of the hotel. For instance, we use LED lighting, and the lighting in hotel rooms switches off automatically when the room key is removed.

Conscious purchasing choices

When choosing products and suppliers, we also consider material use, origin and waste processing. For example, we serve organically certified coffee from De Koffie Jongens and, for our coffee facilities, we look for ways to limit material use and waste.

In other areas too, we seek solutions to use materials efficiently and reduce waste.

Giving materials a second life

During renovations, we look at whether materials and products we no longer use ourselves can still be of value elsewhere. Mattresses, bedding and tableware, for example, are given a second destination wherever possible through Stichting Oost-Europa.

In this way, we try to prevent usable materials from unnecessarily ending up as waste.

Together with our guests

Guests can also help reduce energy and water consumption during their stay. For example, by using towels for longer and turning off the heating or air conditioning when it is not needed.

Those travelling electric can use our charging facilities for electric cars and electric bicycles at Hotel Mitland.

With these and other measures, we continue to look at where we can further reduce our impact on the environment.
