On June 26, 1321, the first stone of the Dom was laid, and only after 60 years of construction was the Dom Tower completed in 1382. The Dom Tower is the tallest tower in the Netherlands. In 1674, a devastating storm hit Utrecht, causing the nave of the Dom Church to collapse. The church and tower became permanently separated. It wasn't until 1826, 150 years after the great storm, that all the remains of the collapsed nave were cleared, creating the current Dom Square. In 1901, the first major restoration began, lasting 29 years. From 2019 until the end of summer 2024, the Dom Tower was once again surrounded by scaffolding for a restoration; the Dom is restored every 50 years. Today, the Dom Tower can once again be admired without scaffolding.
