During this bike route, you will pass by the three-dimensional, asymmetrical architectural masterpiece by Gerrit Rietveld that is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Man and woman cycling in Utrecht

Gerrit Rietveld was an influential Dutch architect from the 20th century. He was one of the founders of the Dutch movement De Stijl. He designed many modernist buildings, including the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht. He was a pioneer in designing so-called 'spatial constructions', using a more geometric approach to architecture. His work was not only influential in the Netherlands but also internationally.

The immense forts you encounter during the cycling route also command admiration. These forts were built in the 19th century to protect the Netherlands from attacks from the east. The forts are strategically located along the rivers, canals, and dikes of the Netherlands and consist of a combination of fortresses, bunkers, ramparts, and redoubts. At Fort bij Vechten, you can learn all about their significance at the Waterline Museum.

In addition to all these special sights, also enjoy the nature you cycle through. It is a varied but very interesting route! Don't forget to stop at one of the nice stopping points to enjoy your well-deserved break.
